Children are born with a natural curiosity about their world. As young children, they are interested in interacting with their environment. They want to explore and experience their surroundings and develop friendships and relationships with others.
Unfortunately, as children enter into more structured learning settings, including school, they may begin to struggle to learn. Their brains may not process information in the same way that other students’ do. This may cause them to “fall behind” in their academic work or to behave in way that seems inappropriate for their age. These children may become labeled as “lazy,” “stupid,” or “bad,” when, in fact, they are none of these things.
Sometimes children who are gifted or have a special talent in a particular area may become bored with school, as the work is too easy. Even these children may fall behind because they become bored and start to tune out.
The best way to find out the reasons why a child may be having difficulty in school, or not performing to the best of his or her ability, is to undergo a thorough, in-depth assessment. This assessment can evaluate the child’s underlying cognitive strengths and weaknesses, by pinpointing the cognitive processes that may be causing the difficulty and identifying areas of cognitive strengths. Through this process, it is possible to identify appropriate academic or behavioral interventions and accommodations, as well as appropriate curriculum for the child. When provided with an appropriate school setting, children should once again enjoy developing into the learners that they naturally are.
